Feminism: What it means to me & Why it is Important! ♡

Hey everyone,

Hope you are all doing really well, I am so excited to write today’s post because I do think it is SO SO important for me to talk about it as there are lots of misconceptions about it and people don’t even know what it is before they judge people who call themselves pone. So the topic today is Feminism. I know this post is quite controversial, but please be nice in the comments and respect my views as I will always respect yours and it is a great thing that we can all have our own opinions. Feminism is so important to me, so I really wanted to talk about it, enjoy the post.

So here is the official dictionary definition:

FEMINISM: THE ADVOCACY OF WOMEN’S RIGHTS ON THE GROUND OF THE EQUALITY OF THE SEXES.

This is the first thing I want to address, lots of people think that Feminists believe women are better than men and should have full power and control over the men. That is actually a whole lot of rubbish and if anyone actually looks into Feminism you can find out more and that what people presume Feminism to be, is actually not what it is. Feminists actually want equality of all the sexes and everyone to be equal, so we all get equal working pay, equal opportunities for everything and equal treatment from everyone else. We still haven’t achieved full equality, but hopefully one day we will. But, before I get more into Feminism, I just wanted to clear that up.

I spent most of my life obviously oblivious to anything to do with Feminism or equal rights, the internet and also my Sociology lessons have opened my mind to the actual reality that we STILL don’t have equal rights. That isn’t right, from where I am coming from what is the difference between a man and a woman in respect of the law and working. Nothing, they can both do a job as good as the other, why should we get paid less for doing the same job just because we were born a girl? We work just as hard to get to the top, so it should be nothing less. It just baffles me how we are in 2018 and still things need to change.

100 years ago, women did something INCREDIBLE and managed to get the vote not only for them but for all the future generations like us. So, I want to create a brighter future for all of the generations of women behind me. Women who might one day change the world. They protested and realised their rights and that is why we are where we are today and I can’t thank them enough because the world would be such a different place if that hadn’t happened.

There are obvious differences and separation between boys and girls that I never realised before but it happens from a young age. Even the colours, if people find out you are having a baby boy, they buy you blue things right? But if you are having a girl, lots of pink! Why do we assume those colours with genders, there is no reason why you can’t put your little girl in blue or why she can’t like blue and the same goes for boys with pink. There are other things, such as sports, people still find it weird if a girl wants to join the boys and get muddy playing football or rugby and if a boy fancies joining the dancing or gymnastics. There shouldn’t be things that are labelled ‘boy’ ‘girl’, ‘women’ or ‘men’ because that is a whole lot of traditional rubbish in my opinion, be who you are and do whatever you want. Don’t stick to what is expected of you because nothing will change otherwise, things need to move forward.

Okay, let’s look at professional sport, how many millions of views do men’s football matches and rugby matches get? SO SO many, whereas how many people see women’s even on the TV that much? Not me, this shouldn’t be the case, how are men more worthy of professional sport and hefty pay than women? We can play just as good or better, so why does this issue exist? I actually have no idea, but as long as lots of amazing, strong women carry on playing and striving for the top, things will hopefully change.

I am so glad to see that this whole male ‘breadwinner’ thing has changed, women have as much right to be the breadwinner as the men, we can all work and it should all be fine. It is actually proven that lots more divorces are started by women because they feel like they don’t need men in their lives anymore, they want to be single and independent and provide for themselves because that is what we can do. Also, it is so expensive in the UK to not have if you are in relationship or living together both male and female residents working because people can sometimes struggle on one income. But also, I do know a few families where their mum works but they have a stay at home dad, which I think is pretty cool and also proof of how much things have changed.

I do believe that the future will be bright for all of us women, things are going in the right direction and forwards rather than backwards. If you want that job whatever it is go for it, if you like a different colour or sport than what is expected of you, go for it. YOU DO YOU! Nothing will change, unless we have strong people in front of us to make everyone else stronger!

Thanks so much for reading this post, it means so much. I really hope you all have a great rest of your week. Also make sure to leave your thoughts in the comments below as I am really interested to know your thoughts on this!

Love,

Eden xx

I get what you mean about feminism and I feel the same way. I’m so glad that the movement has changed – here’s to us being independent women!

I totally agree that people think that feminism is when women are better than men but they are so wrong! I am proud to be a feminist and if someone does make a remark about it, I explain to them that it’s about equality and men can be feminists too. I think it is so amazing what women achieved nearly 100 years ago. Without them, we wouldn’t be able to basic things like voting as you have mentioned. I haven’t seen a feminist post in a long time so thank you for bringing some conversation to it x
