Sleep: Important or Not? ♡

Hello everyone, ♡

Happy Saturday! Today’s post is all about something we spend ⅓ of our life doing and that is SLEEP. You might me thinking, Eden are you okay? Why would you want to write a blog post about sleep? Well I’ll tell you why, today’s post is all about whether we regard  sleep as important or not? Do we value it enough, does it make us unproductive etc? If you still fancy reading aha, please do and hope you enjoy!

So I remember when I was younger I always used to think sleep was a waste of time. I literally used to tell my family how pointless I thought sleep was and give them the huge list of things I could be doing rather than sleeping. They always used to laugh at me and say how important sleep actually was and I needed it etc. I used to wake up around 5am and go downstairs and switch the TV on and put on that Cbeebies show with the babysitter who looked after all the kids like for Tina the taxi driver etc. I can’t remember what that show is called now so if you remember please comment below! It came on about 6, I used to just watch the pre TV thing go round and round. I don’t even know how IT functioned back then but I was one crazy child lol.

Now, I obviously am so different. Sleep is literally one of my favourite things to do and that is no lie at all. I am that sad. I’ve had days where I have slept practically all day, it helps me destress and is definitely beneficial to my Year 11 breakdowns. It literally took me years thought o finally realise how beneficial and important sleep is and to fall in love with it. I think as you grow up and obviously go through puberty as a teen sleep is needed to help you grow etc. Life is also so exhausting, I always feel like I haven’t had enough and crave it lol. I guess sleep helps me forget about my stresses and relax really, for a few hours I don’t have exams or life in general to worry about, my brain can just switch off.

So is sleep important or not? Well Science of course proves 100% that you actually do need it to be your best self. Your brain needs to re energise and you need that sleep – life balance. I do know that some people struggle to sleep and that is so hard, that constant battle of knowing that you need it but struggling. I remember how crap I felt in the summer holidays because my sleeping pattern has got so messed up and I didn’t feel good. Sleep affects your mood, especially for me, the more I get in a regular pattern, the happier I am. That isn’t the same for everyone. There is alway so much whirring around people’s brains , it is so hard to switch off. You have so much to do or get done, you don’t feel like sleep is the best option to you at the time. I know I get it and it is totally okay to feel like that. You aren’t alone.

But on the other end of the spectrum, for me it is not good to sleep all day everyday either because anytime you are awake you feel so drowsy and unproductive, sluggish I guess. Sleep is only beneficial and helpful if you have your positive life balance of a good sleeping routine and then being up and doing things. This is for me anyway, it might be totally different for you. I also feel like I never get much productive stuff done if I am on my bed all day, I always feel tired and just end up procrastinating. Also I love pyjama days but I do think for me personally I do need to change out of pyjamas to comfy tracksuit bottoms and a top as if I am wearing semi-proper clothes I am more productive. I think it just depends on the person, on how much sleep you need, how it changed for you throughout your life, your lifestyle as well, your job etc. This can all affect how you see sleep and how it affects and benefits you, or not. I will probably feel different when I have a job, when I’ve moved out etc. But I think I will always know that sleep is important even if I just got a little bit, it is better than getting nothing at all.

Just thought I would end this post with some interesting facts I have found about sleep:

  • High earners (£65 – £75,000) get the best sleep
  • Humans are the only mammals that willingly delay sleep
  • Sleep experts have discovered a direct link between people’s favourite sleeping positions and their personalities
  • Within 5 minutes of waking up, 50% of your dream is forgotten
  • The average person falls asleep in 7 minutes.

This post has been a super weird ramble post. I am sorry, if I am brutally honest, this post is a big mess but I really enjoyed writing it. I would love to know your opinions on sleep below! How does it affect your life, has that changed over time? Thanks so much for reading! Have a fab day!

Lots of love,

Eden xx

I do notice the difference in myself if I don’t get enough sleep! To me, I see sleep as really important, I always feel refreshed afterwards. I have enjoyed this post! It’s definitely got me thinking about sleep.

I used to hate sleeping as a kid haha! But now, just like you, I often would want to sleep whenever I don’t have anything else to do. It’s just hard on my part because I have a toddler that won’t make me sleep lol and I don’t function really well when I don’t get much sleep, it makes me sad! This is such a helpful post love, thank you for sharing this with us! Xx

Such an interesting topic Eden!! I’ve had my fair share of interesting sleeping experiences recently, as I’ve learnt just how important sleep is for me and my body! Its so funny how sleep is different for everyone, someone has to sleep for hours and hours to feel energised while others can live on only just a few hours! Lovely post xx

It’s funny because when i was younger i’d hate going to bed, i’d throw tantrums and just make such a fuss but as i got older i adored sleep so much and the more sleep i got, the better i was feeling!

Loved this post Eden! I used to be so bad with sleeping up until like year 10 – I’d be able to stay up until like 4am and then go to school and still be functioning (I have no idea how!) and defo didn’t see sleep as important. Now I’m like you; I love sleep and literally lol forward to going to bed every day😂I can barely leave the house if I’ve not had at least 7 hours! Great post 💛💛

Everyone has a different requirement for sleep time. Some need 8hrs while some are good and fresh after just 4 hrs of sleep. Another thing is that sleep also affects your life expectancy. Most won’t agree but less sleep would stress out your cells as they die at a higher rate then expected to be.

Great topic! Sleep is so important for you to function from day to day. Some nights I sleep great and other nights, not so great. I try to monitor my sleep just like my exercise and healthy eating habits. Keep writing and blogging!

I tend to sleep a lot as my mental health has gone for a toss. I completely agree with you that we forget what we dream within five minutes of waking up.

Sleep is important. Lack of sleep increases anxiety and depression and decreased ability to focus and function

100% sleep is SO important. I remember during A levels at some points I was running on four hours of sleep and that didn’t last long as I was exhausted!! I always feel more energized after a good night sleep and for sure get a lot more work done! -Tash xx
